Description
Of Norman extraction, the Winthrop family traces its descent to the years following the Conquest of 1066, when lands in Kent were first granted to their forebear. Raised to the Barony of Erith in the reign of King John and advanced over the centuries through prudent loyalty and careful alliance, the family attained the dignity of Earl of Scadbury in 1739. Noted less for martial display than for administrative competence and political steadiness, the Winthrops secured their fortune through enlightened estate management and judicious commercial enterprise, most famously in the recent establishment of the exclusive House of Winthrop in London. For over twelve generations they have maintained a position of cultivated influence, prosperous yet restrained, traditional yet adaptive, and are counted among the more substantial and enduring noble houses of England.
