Description
The Agiad Dynasty was one of the two royal houses that ruled ancient Sparta, the other being the Eurypontid Dynasty. According to Greek mythology, the Agiad Dynasty traced its lineage back to Heracles (Hercules in Roman mythology), who was believed to be an ancestor of the Spartan kings. The dynasty took its name from Agis I, the legendary founder and first king of the Agiad line. The Agiad Dynasty played a significant role in shaping the history and identity of Sparta. The kings of this dynasty were considered the hereditary leaders of the Spartan military, and their authority was primarily focused on matters of war and defense. The most famous Agiad king was probably Leonidas I, who led the Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae during the Persian Wars.
