The Norman Kingdom of England: The Anarchy "Shame on him who thinks evil of it" Year: 1147 The Anarchy period in Norman England (1135-1154) unfolded amidst a power struggle following King Henry I's death, marked by the competing claims of Matilda and Stephen for the English throne. As the kingdom grappled with internal strife, across Europe, a different kind of trouble was brewing with the beginning of the Second Crusade in 1147. The call to retake the Holy Land resonated, drawing European monarchs, including Louis VII of France and Emperor Conrad III of Germany, into a mission to defend and reclaim Jerusalem.
