Description
In 1880, Chile was heavily involved in the War of the Pacific with Peru and Bolivia. The conflict was sparked by ambitions to control the mineral-rich Atacama Desert. Back home, President Aníbal Pinto dealt with the huge challenge of funding the war, managing rising inflation, and navigating deep political divides over civil reforms and church-state relations. Despite the economic strain, the steady flow of captured nitrate wealth started to turn Chile into a regional powerhouse.
