Description
During the Napoleonic era, Naples experienced significant upheaval. Initially part of the Kingdom of Naples, King Ferdinand IV faced challenges from revolutionary France. In 1798-1799, French forces under General Championnet invaded, prompting Ferdinand to flee to Sicily. The French established the Parthenopean Republic, supported by Neapolitan Radicals but opposed by royalists and peasants. It collapsed within months due to a royalist counter-revolution aided by the British, restoring Ferdinand to power. In 1806, a renewed French invasion forced Ferdinand to flee again. Napoleon made his brother King of Naples, who abolished feudal privileges and reformed legal and administrative systems. In 1808, Joseph was replaced by Joachim Murat, Napoleon’s brother-in-law, who expanded reforms, improved infrastructure, and sought greater independence as the French Empire weakened. Murat initially allied with Austria but rejoined Napoleon during the Hundred Days, ultimately failing to take Napels.
