Description
The Kingdom of Italy during the Napoleonic Wars was a Napoleonic client state in Northern Italy that existed from 1805 to 1814. Established by Napoleon Bonaparte, it played a significant role in the broader Napoleonic conflicts and the reshaping of Europe during this tumultuous period. The Kingdom of Italy was crucial in supporting Napoleonic military campaigns. Italian troops, conscripted into the Grande Armée, participated in many significant battles, including the Battle of Wagram in 1809 and the Russian campaign of 1812. The kingdom provided not only manpower but also resources and a strategic geographical position that facilitated Napoleon's control over the Italian Peninsula and his operations in the wider European theater. Napoleon installed his stepson, Eugène de Beauharnais, as Viceroy of Italy, effectively making him the ruler in Napoleon's absence. The political structure of the Kingdom was modeled closely after the French system, with a centralized administration.
