Ruled by a series of Ottoman-appointed governors known as Khedives, Egypt experienced ambitious efforts toward modernization under figures like Muhammad Ali Pasha. These initiatives included infrastructural projects like the Suez Canal and reforms in education and military organization. Despite these advancements, Egypt remained subject to significant foreign influence, particularly from European powers like Britain and France.
