Description

The "Lanciarii Stobenses" is a legion raised by Diocletian. It was recruited in the Stobi region in the Balkan province of Macedonia, and would continue to do so there. As the name suggests, all men in the legion were armed with a spear suitable for both thrusting and throwing. Stobi was also the area where the legion was most likely encamped. The legion would be part of the army that was destroyed by the Goths on the plains of Adrianople on August 9th 378 AD, with it being one of the many units destroyed, but it was reconstituted afterwards again in Stobi, as it appears later on as a legiones comitatenses under the Magister Militum per Thracias in the Eastern Empire. If the legion survived into the 5th century, it would continue to exist until the reign of Justinian I when he would disband the legions.
