Description
The "Ala Veterana Gallica", is an alae auxillary unit of cavalry raised in the first century, with its earliest mention being in 54 AD. Cavalrymen were initially recruited in Gaul, with it at some point expanding to include recruitment in Thrace. In total it numbered 480 men divided into 16 tourmae of 30 men each. It was first stationed in Syria from 54 AD, remaining there until it was moved to Egypt sometime around 130 AD when it is first attested there. This Alae would remain in Egypt for the rest of existence, appearing in various diplomas, with it by the 5th century being under the Comites Limitis Aegypti.
