Description
The Bayfield Police Department (BPD) was formed in 1926 after Bayfield became an incorporated city along Mountclair's southern coast. What began as a small department responsible for protecting local fishermen and merchants has grown into a modern law enforcement agency serving one of the state's busiest coastal cities. Due to Bayfield's location near major shipping terminals, and industrial facilities, the department faces a wide range of public safety challenges, including narcotics trafficking, organized crime, commercial theft, and maritime incidents. By 2006, the Bayfield Police Department consists of approximately 240 sworn officers and 60 civilian personnel, operating around the clock to serve a population of more than 120,000 residents. Known for its aggressive crime suppression efforts and specialized units, BPD works closely with the Mountclair State Police and surrounding sheriff's offices to combat serious crime throughout the region.
