Gens Claudiaᅠᅠ #34168780
Description
𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 In the early Republic, the Claudii were the first of the Sabine tribes to join Rome, becoming a senatorial family. During the First and Second Punic Wars, there were many notable members of the gens. 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘷𝘴 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘴 𝘊𝘢𝘷𝘥𝘦𝘹--whom was the younger brother of 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘷𝘴 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘴 𝘊𝘢𝘦𝘤𝘷𝘴, the famous sponsor of the Appian Way and the first aqueduct--was the main supporter of the First Punic War. During the Second Punic War, 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘷𝘴 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘴 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘷𝘴, elected consul five times and awarded the spolia optima, successfully sieged the city of Syracuse, then led troops against Hannibal in Italy. 𝐇𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐲 The two notable branches of gens Claudia during this period were the 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘥𝘪𝘪 𝘗𝘷𝘭𝘤𝘩𝘳𝘪, one of four patrician stirpes descended from 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘷𝘴 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘴 𝘊𝘢𝘦𝘤𝘷𝘴, and the 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘥𝘪𝘪 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪, a plebeian stirp surviving well into the Principate.
