54th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment, Company A The 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was a Union regiment that was formed in 1863. The regiment saw extensive service, and was the second African-American regiment after the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The regiment would recruit and train on the outskirts of Boston, Massachusetts at Camp Meigs. Abolitionists were active in recruitment efforts including civil activist Frederick Douglass, who had his two sons be one of the first to enlist.
