Görevi caydırıcılık sağlayacak şekilde askerî gücün muhafazasını ve güçlendirilmesini sağlamak, Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi kararıyla yurt dışında verilen görevleri yapmak ve uluslararası barışın sağlanmasına yardımcı olmaktır. Türk Silahlı Kuvvetlerinin başkomutanlığı Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisinin manevi varlığından ayrılamaz ve cumhurbaşkanı tarafından temsil olunur.
