Description
The Equites Sagitarrii was raised by the Tetrarchy. It was created from part of the old Cohors I Milliaria Hemesenorum Aurelia Antoniniana Sagittaria Equitata Civium Romanorum which had men from Emesa/Homs and the surrounding area/its territory from both Syrians and Hebrews/Jews and locals from the area around their camp in Pannonia Inferior. Later recruitment would happen in locally in the hinterland of its camp in Valeria. As the name tells us this cavalry unit was mounted archers armed with bows. They were stationed in Dunaujvaros Castle or Dunapentele/Intercisa Fort in the province of Valeria (central Hungary) under the command of the Dux Provinicae Valeriae Ripensis, acting as part of its garrison. As a limitanei-grade unit, here they would remain on the Limes Pannonicus, guarding its section of the border. This unit would exist until 433 AD when the Pannonian provinces were abandoned, with barbarians soon setting up dwellings there.
