𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐄 𝐄𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐓𝐔𝐌 EQUESTRIAN TROOPS The equites, or Roman cavalrymen, were wealthy citizens who could either afford to maintain a horse for military service or those who could be given a stipend to do so. In the early Roman Republic, they served as the cavalry class, playing a crucial role in battles with their mobility and speed.
