Description

The 1st Motorized Rifle Division was created in 1956, not long after the NVA was established in the framework of the Cold War and the creation of the Warsaw Pact. It was developed from parts of the East German paramilitary police force, the Kasernierte Volkspolizei (KVP), which was later converted into the official GDR army, the NVA.
