Description

The French occupied Savoy and the County of Nice, which were annexed to France in 1792 and 1793. Victor-Amadeus The Third tried to retake Nice but failed. In 1798, the French Directory asked King Ch4rles-3mmanuel IV of Sardinia to respect the alliance, but the King refused and was forced to abdicate after being invaded by French troops. During the French occupation, the kingdom's economy suffered a severe contraction, the textile industry collapsed and foreign trade declined. French troops pillaged the countryside and towns, stealing priceless works of art. The king's governmental activity during his stay in Cagliari was minimal. In short, Victor-Amadeus III joined the coalition against revolutionary France but suffered losses of territory and an invasion of Sardinia. The Savoy family was forced to move to Cagliari, and it was not until the arrival of Napol3on that the monarchy was restored and coins were minted according to the French decimal system. This is the story of Sardegna.
