Description
Argos, one of the oldest city-states of ancient Greece, lay nestled in the fertile plains of the Argolid in the northeastern Peloponnese. Known for its rich history, it was a powerful and proud city, with roots reaching back to the Mycenaean period. By the Archaic and Classical eras, Argos stood out for its distinctive culture and staunch independence, often positioning itself as a rival to the dominant Sparta. While it lacked Sparta’s rigid military lifestyle, Argos produced skilled hoplite warriors who fought in the traditional Greek phalanx formation—dense rows of soldiers bearing heavy shields and spears. Argos was particularly famous for its worship of Hera, and it housed a grand sanctuary to her at Heraion, which served as a religious center for the Argolid region. Culturally, Argos contributed significantly to Greek art, particularly sculpture, and was considered a center for bronze craftsmanship. Throughout its history, Argos played a complex role in Greek politics, sometime.
