Description
The USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, commissioned in 1954 and leading the development of the U.S. nuclear fleet under Admiral Hyman G. Rickover. She achieved revolutionary milestones by completing the first submerged voyage under the North Pole in 1958 and setting numerous records for speed and endurance, proving the viability of nuclear-powered submarines. Decommissioned in 1980, the Nautilus is preserved as a National Historic Landmark and serves as the centerpiece of the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut.
