North Atlantic Treaty Organization | Organisation du Traité de l'Atlantique Nord The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is an intergovernmental military alliance that implements the North Atlantic Treaty, signed on 4 April 1949. NATO constitutes a system of collective defense whereby its independent member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party. NATO strives to jointly train and streamline cooperation between member states to increase the overall effectiveness of mutual combatant strategy against foreign adversaries.
