Description

When the Spaniards arrived on the shores of the island of Cebu, the outsiders brought their beliefs with them, and with this, they converted the ancestors in their ways. The babaylan of Cebu was stripped of her title and rank, in favor of the outsider’s own beliefs, hence, they lost their connection to the Diwatas. This sent ripples across the archipelago, an echo so loud and profound that the first great council of the elders was formed. We called it the first Sandiwaan- a council of all of the islands’ babaylans in a remote area in the heart of the island of Siquijor. Everyone was there, from the babaylans of the Ivatans, to the babaylans of Bukidnon and beyond. Their matter of concern involved a prophecy from the elder Inday KuImata, the eldest of all babaylans, foretold prophecy that not only prophesied the downfall of their tribes and kingdoms but also the downfall of their ties with the spirit world itself. Fearing the worst, the elders founded LAKAN.
