Description
The Philippine-American War was a fight for independence that was betrayed. After centuries under Spain, Filipinos had already won their revolution. They had an army, a government, and had proclaimed independence in Kawit. They believed they were finally free. But Spain did not give the Philippines its freedom. It sold the Philippines to the United States. The Filipinos were not consulted. To the United States, it was a purchase. To Filipinos, it was another colonization. The war began when an American soldier fired on a Filipino in Manila. From there it grew into a full war. The Filipino army fought in open battles at first, but the American army was larger and better armed. So the Filipinos shifted to guerrilla warfare, fighting from mountains and barrios. The war was cruel. Villages were burned, civilians were moved into camps, and torture was used to get information. Many civilians died not from bullets but from hunger and disease caused by the war.
