Koninklijke Landmacht, #34513119
Description
The Royal Netherlands Navy (Koninklijke Marine, KM) is the naval force of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and one of the four branches of the military, alongside the Royal Army (Koninklijke Landmacht, KL), the Royal Air Force (Koninklijke Luchtmacht, KLu), and the Royal Military Police (Koninklijke Marechaussee, KMar). It is the oldest branch of the Dutch military, and its motto is "global security on and from the sea." The existence of a permanently organized naval force in the Netherlands dates back to January 8, 1488, when the Habsburg Emperor Maximilian I issued the Ordinance on the Admiralty. Over three centuries later, in 1813, the navy received the royal title under King Willem. During the 17th century, the Dutch fleet of the Republic was one of the most powerful navies in the world and played an important role in the Anglo-Dutch Wars, the Dutch War, and the wars against Spain. The Dutch navy also played a key role in the later Napoleonic Wars.
