The First French Empire, officially the French Republic, then the French Empire after 1809, was ruled by Napoleon Bonaparte. It is also known as Napoleonic France or Napoleon France. The empire was established in 1804 and lasted until 1815. At its peak in 1812, the empire encompassed 130 departments and had a population of over 44 million people. It ruled over 90 million subjects throughout Europe and its colonies. The empire was founded on the principles of French hegemony, meaning French dominance over other countries. Napoleon's reign was marked by military expansion, political reforms, and cultural achievements. The empire's legacy continues to be felt today in the areas of law, government, and culture.
