FOUNDED: July 4th, 2024. This battalion, like others within the 160th SOAR, is tasked with providing highly specialized aviation support to special operations forces. It is known for its proficiency in night operations and its ability to conduct precise and rapid insertion and extraction missions. Founding: Date: October 16, 1981 Origin: The unit was initially formed as Task Force 158 in the aftermath of the failed Operation Eagle Claw (Iran Hostage Rescue Mission) in 1980, which highlighted the need for a dedicated, highly trained aviation unit for special operations. Key Responsibilities: Primary Mission: To provide rotary-wing aviation support for special operations forces. Capabilities: SOAR specializes in night flying, precision insertion and extraction, direct action, and aerial fire support.
