Description
KIEVAN RUS' Kievan Rus' was founded when Rurik and his companions were chosen by chieftains of East Slavic tribes to unite the quarreling chiefdoms, instituting the very first East Slavic state. The Rus' were seen as the cultural ancestors of both Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. A crucial center point that flourished from both trade and commerce, the realm was a loose federation of East Slavic and Finnic tribes that were governed by a hierarchy of Viking origin, known as the Varangian Rus'.
