Description
Torn between kinsman and claim, Ecgberht contested Beothric's right to the throne following the death of Cynewulf in 786, and was exiled to later serve in the court of Charlemagne. After Beothric's death in 802, Ecgberht returned with a strong sense of military strategy and tactic, and successfully stabilised the Regnum Occidentalium Saxonum's influence over the English kingdoms within the next few decades. With the Channel touching its southern coast, the Regnum Occidentalium Saxonum played an important role in protecting the island's inhabitants from the Pagans who sought to sack their property and despoil places of worship.
