The Bermont County Sheriff's Office traces its origins back to the early 19th century, in a time when the rugged landscape of Bermont County was a lawless frontier teeming with pioneers, trappers, and outlaws. Officially founded in 1825, the Sheriff's Office was established in response to growing concerns over banditry, land disputes, and conflicts with indigenous tribes. Local settlers petitioned for a formal law enforcement presence, which led to the appointment of the county's first sheriff, Jacob Hemsworth, a seasoned frontiersman known for his fair judgment and keen sense of justice. The BCSO still serves Bermont County maintaining the County Jail, and performing regular patrols over the County Limits, focusing on disbanding local criminal organizations.
