Established in 1815, it was one of two grand duchies in the Mecklenburg region, with its capital in Schwerin. The grand duchy was ruled by the House of Mecklenburg and played a significant role in the German Confederation and later the German Empire. It was known for its cultural and architectural heritage, including the grand Schwerin Castle.
