Description

the Tokugawa Shogunate (Edo period, 1603–1868) maintained its policy of sakoku (national seclusion), but was forced to confront the direct consequences of European conflict, revealing significant weaknesses in its defense systems. The period was marked by increasing foreign incursions, the Phaeton incident of 1808, and a rise in "Dutch Learning" (Rangaku) that began to expose the Shogunate to Western technology.
