海防艦隊部與海防第二艦隊時期: 我國海軍於三十五年元月一日奉命編組成立「海防艦隊部」，為本隊之前身，所轄艦艇皆為抗日戰爭勝利後，自美、英、日等國皆收之機動艦艇編成，民國三十六年為因應動員戡亂，設立「海防第二艦隊」。海防第一艦隊司令部時期: 本隊於三十六年七月一日奉令改編為「海防第一艦隊司令部」，下轄十五艘艦艇。海軍第一艦隊時期:三十九年七月一日本隊奉命改編為「海軍第一艦隊」時轄艦艇共十九艘，同年。海軍驅逐艦隊司令部時期:四十四年元月十六日本隊奉命改編為「海軍驅逐艦隊司令部」，隸屬「艦隊指揮部」，下轄屬艦八艘分編為三個戰隊。民國五十年四月十二日本隊改編改隸「驅逐巡防部隊司令部」下轄屬艦十一艘分邊三個戰隊。自五十六年至六十二年間，美援驅逐艦寄十五艘相繼成軍編入本隊作戰序列共同擔負維護台海安全責任。驅逐第一艦隊時期: 五十七年九月一日直屬上級「艦隊指揮部」及「驅逐巡防部隊司令部」更名為「艦隊司令部」及「驅逐巡防艦隊指揮部」。六十二年九月一日本隊改立艦隊司令部。六十三年十月一日本隊奉命改編為「驅逐第一艦隊」，分編為兩個戰隊，下轄屬艦九艘。海軍一二四艦隊時期: 六十五年元月一日，本隊奉令部隊番號為「海軍一二四艦隊」，下轄二四二及二六四戰隊，時轄有飛彈驅逐艦計十二艘。八十五年五月我購自法國之首艘康定級艦(康定艦)返國成軍，十月十二日西寧艦返國成軍，翌(八十六)年二月、八月、昆明、迪化艦陸續返國成軍，十二月武昌艦、八十七年三月承德艦返國成軍加入本隊戰鬥序列。八十八年十二月一日原隸屬一三一艦隊之二七二戰隊(PCL-1、2、3、5、6、7、8、9艇)移編本隊，八十八年十二月至八九年三月，富陽、南陽、洛陽、綏陽艦陸續汰除，該四艦光榮除役後本隊正式進入全新兵力時程為新一代主戰艦隊。101年11月1日二七二戰隊(PCL-1、2、3、5、6、7、8、9艇)除役。
