City of Lander Auxiliary Police #34847006
Description
The Auxiliary Police was first formed in 1916 as the Department of Homeland Defense to supplement the police force as it lost it's numbers to the war overseas. Reformed in 1918 as the Reserve Police Force, it began to stop functioning as an active component of the department. When war broke again, the Lander Patrol Corps was formed, mustering over 4,500 volunteers. The Lander Auxiliary Police was officially formed in 1967 when the Civil Defense Headquarters closed, the Auxiliary Police inheriting the responsibility of the old Civil Defense Wardens. When crime was on the rise, Auxiliary Police patrols were another way the department attempted to maintain control. The Auxiliary Police has a long history of abuse of authority, brutality, and corruption.
