The Kingdom of Asia #34986500

Description
When Rome appointed Petronius Turpilianus (as we may call him) to the governship of Asia, they knew it was entrusting him with one of the empire’s most glittering provinces. Asia was no distant frontier to be secured by legions, but the jewel of the eastern Mediterranean: fertile, wealthy, and deeply cultured. To govern Asia was not to conquer, but to administer, to preserve its prosperity while securing Rome’s interest. These cities bore the mark of Greek refinement, yet beneath them lay Roman order. Theaters, gymnasia, and marketplaces thrived, while civic councils administered local affairs in harmony with imperial law. To Petronius, Asia seemed less a province to be ruled than a federation of illustrious cities bound together under Rome’s protection.
