It was established as a democratic republic, inspired by the revolutionary ideals of Sun Yat-sen and the 1911 Revolution. The ROC aimed to modernize China with principles of nationalism, democracy, and social welfare. However, its early years were marked by political instability, warlord conflicts, and struggles to unify the country.
