▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The Continental Marines were established on November 10, 1775, by the Continental Congress as a direct counterpart to the British Royal Marines. Their primary role was to serve as the nation's "naval infantry", where they served in companies of up to 100 marines as a compliment aboard the Continental Navy's vessels, and launched amphibious assaults against British land forces. Though small in size, they were an essential component of the American military during the war, designed to operate on both land and on sea. The Marines worked closely with the Continental Navy to enforce discipline aboard ships and carry out raids along enemy's coastline, but they also fought alongside the Continental Army when needed, supporting joint actions during the Revolutionary War. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
