Description
The 58th New York Infantry Regiment, or Polish Legion, was a Union Army unit during the American Civil War, formed in 1861. Led by Colonel Włodzimierz Krzyżanowski, a Polish nobleman and revolutionary, the regiment consisted largely of Polish and other European immigrants, including Germans and Hungarians. The unit fought in major battles, including the Second Battle of Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, where they were part of the heavily engaged XI Corps. Despite language barriers and hardships, the regiment earned respect for their discipline and bravery. Krzyżanowski’s leadership and their commitment to both Union ideals and the broader fight against oppression made the Polish Legion an important part of the Union's immigrant contribution to the war.
