Catania, città siciliana capoluogo dell'omonima provincia, ha una storia lunga ventotto secoli, nel corso dei quali ha vissuto sotto gli attacchi greci, romani, ostrogoti, bizantini, arabi, normanni, germanici, francesi, aragonesi e spagnola fino all'annessione al regno d'Italia nel 1860. Il territorio urbano di Catania antica si articola su due altipiani: la collina di Monte Vergine (49 m s.l.m.), nata da un'eruzione preistorica, il terrazzo di Acquicella, separata da una valle poi colmata dalle lave dell'Eruzione dell'Etna del 1669, nella quale scorreva un corso d'acqua, il fiume Amenano, (che sfociava nei pressi dell'attuale Piazza del Duomo e ora sfocia nel porto) e sulla maggiore pianura di Sicilia: la Piana di Catania, su cui si sviluppò un vasto abitato preistorico.
