Description
16 AIR ASSAULT BRIGADE The formation of 16 Brigade occurred on the 1st of September 1999 through the SDR. The Brigade merged both 5th Airborne Brigade and 24th Airmobile Brigade into 1 single formation. This made a highly capable, versatile and rapidly deployable force able to operate across a spectrum of conflicts. This numbering of the Brigade as 16 was in tribute to the 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions who served in WW2. The Barracks (Merville Barracks) claims its name from the Battle of Merville Gun Battery which was a British led attempt to take over and destroy the German Artillery that threatened the main landing forces on Sword Beach.
