After the Third Italian War of Independence and capture of Rome on 20 September 1870, Italy would be a unified nation under the Iron Crown of Lombardy, headed by King Victor Emmanuel II. The Kingdom would remain stable under Emmanuel's rule until 1878, and until the start of World War I, which is also known as the Fourth Italian War of Independence.
