Description
The Garde Ecossaise was raised in 1425 by Charles VII Valois. It initially numbered 25 gentlemen from Scotland, another 24 Scots were sent over in 1450, and by 1490 it had 25 'bodyguards' (a small unit of 4 men-at-arms: an archer, squire, a mounted crossbowman, and servant), and 75 archers. At some unknown point it 100 heavy cavalry and 200 foot-archers, all recruited from the lesser nobility of Scotland. The cavalrymen were called 'Gentilshommes à bec-de-corbin' and later taken out of the guard, the infantry as the 'small bodyguard'. Recruitment was initially done from Scots until the reign Henry II Valois when Frenchmen began to be recruited into the guard. By the time of Charles IX Valois the guard almost exclusively French, later on the only Scottish part was its name. The first and initial company was the 'Gardes de la Manche' which numbered 24 men and were the closest guards to the King of France. The second company was formed sometime later by men-at-arms of the
