Description
The Cult of Augustus was a state-sponsored religious movement in ancient Rome that venerated Augustus, the first emperor, as a divine figure. Established in 27 BCE, it served both to legitimize his rule and consolidate his power, portraying him as the savior of Rome who restored order and moral virtue after years of civil war. Augustus was worshipped as both a living deity and, after his death in 14 CE, as a posthumous god, with temples, altars, and rituals dedicated to his divinity across the empire. The cult became a key political and propaganda tool, reinforcing imperial authority and promoting loyalty to the emperor, while symbolizing the intertwining of Roman identity, imperial power, and divine kingship.
