Description
Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS) is a rare neurological condition where individuals see persistent flickering dots (white, black, transparent, or colored) across their visual field. Symptoms often include palinopsia, photophobia, enhanced entoptic phenomena, and tension headaches. The condition is constant, with no known cure, though treatments are under research. Comorbidities like migraines and tinnitus are associated with more severe cases, while astigmatism is also common but not directly linked to the visual disturbances. The cause of VSS remains unclear, but it may involve hyperactive neurons in the right lingual gyrus and left cerebellum or be related to thalamocortical dysrhythmia, potentially caused by a failure in the thalamic reticular nucleus's inhibitory action. This disruption could impair suppression of excitatory sensory input. Research into VSS is limited by challenges in diagnosis and small study groups, but brain imaging suggests it is a neurological disorder.
