Description
The "Derweze Salt Mine Transit Authority' (DSMTA) was the transportation wing of the now-defunct "Derweze Salt Mining Corporation". Opened in 1915, the Derweze Salt Mine was among the most productive salt-extracting sites in Europe. It quickly expanded to include an impressive 12 extraction sites of varying depths and sizes. It earned the title of the "World's largest active salt mine", a record it held until its abandonment in 1991. After its closure, the mine was occasionally used as a tourist attraction until 2003. However, sporadic activity suggests otherwise. Witnesses have reported large numbers of vehicles entering the mine at odd hours of the night, yet none are seen leaving. These mysterious incidents have given the site an almost mythical reputation, with some believing that the former salt mine is still in operation... albeit for a very different purpose.
