Description

The Fujiwara family (藤原家, Fujiwara-ke) was a powerful family of court nobles that dominated Japanese politics throughout the Heian period (794–1185), with roots tracing back to the Asuka (538–710) and Nara (710–794) periods. Unlike the military clans, the Fujiwara established control through regency politics (Sekkan politics) rather than military rule, holding a monopoly on the positions of Sesshō (regent for minor emperors) and Kampaku (chancellor for adult emperors). Their peak power spanned from the mid-9th century through the 11th century (roughly 858–1086), during which they maintained authority over the Imperial Court in Kyoto through strategic marriage alliances with the imperial line. Their influence declined in the 12th century with the rise of the cloistered emperor system and the warrior class (such as the Taira and Minamoto clans). In the modern era, the head of the Fujiwara family is the USR leader, Ibuki Fujiwara.
