ปี พ.ศ. 2499 เป็นช่วงกลางของสมัยรัฐบาลจอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม ประเทศไทยกำลังอยู่ในยุคสงครามเย็น มีการร่วมมือกับสหรัฐอเมริกาอย่างใกล้ชิดทั้งด้านการทหารและเศรษฐกิจ ในปีนี้ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ภูมิพลอดุลยเดช (รัชกาลที่ 9) ทรงผนวชระหว่างวันที่ 22 ตุลาคม – 5 พฤศจิกายน ถือเป็นเหตุการณ์สำคัญระดับชาติ วิถีชีวิตของประชาชนส่วนใหญ่อยู่ในแบบเรียบง่าย สังคมไทยเริ่มรับอิทธิพลตะวันตกมากขึ้น โดยเฉพาะจากสหรัฐฯ ซึ่งมีฐานทัพและกิจกรรมทางเศรษฐกิจในไทยจำนวนมาก สรุป: ปี 2499 เป็นปีแห่งความเปลี่ยนแปลง ทั้งด้านศาสนา การเมือง และวัฒนธรรม ประเทศไทยกำลังปรับตัวสู่โลกสมัยใหม่ภายใต้อิทธิพลตะวันตก ขณะยังคงรักษารากเหง้าทางวัฒนธรรมเดิมไว้.
