Description
In 1986, the Maine National Guard was mobilized when strange riots swept through Portland and Bangor. What began as civil unrest quickly revealed itself as something far worse—Zombies. The 172nd Heavy Weapons Battalion and 172nd Mechanized Battalion moved to secure key highways, while the 172nd Infantry Brigade set up defensive lines around Augusta. M113 APCs and M60 Machine Guns tanks were pulled from depots, their firepower critical in the brutal street battles that followed. Operation Pine Shield attempted to evacuate civilians south to New Hampshire, but swarms along I-95 forced a retreat. The Guard fell back to a National Guard Base in Augusta, fortifying it. With radios crackling of other states collapsing, the Maine National Guard swore to hold the north, their motto Dirigo—“I Lead” Became "I Stand"—becoming a grim promise of survival in a world overrun by the dead.
