THE U.S. VOLUNTEERS 1899-1902 The United States Volunteers (USV) played a crucial role in the Philippine-American War. These volunteer forces, numbering around 20,000, were formed to supplement regular US Army troops. They came from various states, with many enlisting for adventure, patriotism or economic reasons. U.S. Volunteers saw action in major battles like Manila, Tirad Pass and Zapote River. Their bravery and sacrifices helped secure key victories. However, the war's guerrilla nature and harsh environment took a heavy toll. The USV suffered significant casualties from combat, disease and tropical conditions. Despite challenges, the USV's contributions helped establish US control over the Philippines, shaping the country's future.
