Description
As a citizen force, the Aspides tou Hēliou would have been composed of Rhodian citizens, likely from the upper and middle classes, who were trained and equipped to fight in the traditional Greek hoplite style. They would have been heavily armored, wielding large circular shields (aspides) that symbolized their responsibility in defending the island. The name "Shields of Helios" reflects the idea that these soldiers carried the physical protection of their homeland, while symbolically embodying the god’s strength and guidance in battle.
