Description
The Ashbournes were a family draped in shadows, their name whispered with both reverence and unease in the nearby village. To Mary, they were a collection of broken pieces, bound together by blood and haunted by loss. Her father, Elias Ashbourne, was a stern and distant figure, a man of few words but many secrets. He spent his days immersed in books and letters, always chasing knowledge that seemed to lead him further away from his family. Mary remembered his voice as cold, measured, and rarely directed at her unless necessary. Her mother, Celeste, was the opposite—a figure of warmth and beauty in Mary’s early memories. Celeste had a laugh that could fill the manor’s vast, lonely halls, but that laughter grew scarce as illness consumed her. By the time Mary turned ten, her mother’s vibrant spirit had faded, leaving behind an emptiness that seeped into the family.
