Description
Thespiae was an ancient Greek city located in Boeotia, near the base of Mount Helicon. It was situated to the west of Thebes, close to the northern edge of the Gulf of Corinth. Thespiae was known for its cultural significance and military contributions, particularly during the classical period of Greece. The city is most famous for its role in the Persian Wars, where 700 Thespians fought alongside the Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae, showing great bravery and sacrifice. Thespiae also had a strong artistic heritage, being home to the famous statue of Eros by Praxiteles. Additionally, the nearby Mount Helicon was considered sacred to the Muses, making the area a center for poets and musicians.
